The growing number of calls for some form of Special Economic Zone in Europe was highlighted when participants from Italy and abroad met with delegates in Gioia Tauro, southern Italy, on Wednesday the 26th  June for the 2nd edition of the Conference:

GLOBAL CONNECTIVITY WITH THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN

with a special emphasis on
THE ROLE OF FREE ZONES IN THE INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS NETWORK

The role of World Free Zone Convention, based in London, is to highlight the role of Free and Special Economic Zones in fostering development throughout the world by organising Conferences and Training Programmes.  Events have been held in key business centres such as Shanghai, Hyderabad (India), Kuala Lumpur, the UAE, Cairo, South Africa, Charleston (USA) and European capitals. 

Graham Mather, Chairman of WFZC, said immediately after the event:  "Just back from WFZC's most successful Mediterranean Conference at Gioia Tauro in Calabria I was struck by the enthusiasm to use the opportunities to create EU free zones more on a par with their global counterparts. The need to compete and maximise the attractions of Italian zones to investors came through strongly from politicians investors and port operators. We look forward to a real push to make use of opportunities in EU law to see a new wave of European free zones. The Port Authority worked with us with great generosity and hospitality to stage a superb discussion.”

The Italian speakers included the Presidents of the Other key speakers from Italy included: the President of the Gioia Tauro Port Authority, Region Calabria and CONFINDUSTRIA Reggio Calabria, the Italian Customs Agency and representatives of other government departments and private organisations as well as the President of Contship Italia Group and Trade Unions . Of particular interest was the presentation of Prof. Maurizio D'Amico who clearly set out the current position of the EU on Zones and how other European countries, particularly Poland and Spain, are already benefiting from Zones.

Speakers form outside Italy included Ms. Courtney Fingar Editor, fDi Magazine, London, UK, Mr. Oussama El Omari former CEO of Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone, UAE and a WFZC Regional Ambassador, Mr. Michel Hek Principal Consultant, Ecorys, Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Dr. Dragan Kostic CEO of Free Zone PIROT, Serbia.

In the presence of the Italian Government officials Mr. El Omari highlighted the urgency  and importance of establishing a Free Zone which should be adjacent to the port in order to attract investments, create jobs and make use the abundant local skilled workforce in order to battle unemployment  (36%) in the Calabria region which is considered one of the highest in southern Europe.  The  Calabrian officials discussed with Mr. El Omari the possibility of organising a trip to the UAE in order to visit various Free Zones in the country so they can understand the best practice of Zones. The delegation will also be accompanied by local and international investors from the private sector in the Calabrian region.
